Serve
Through Short-Term Missions
Do you have a heart and passion for discipling and loving? There is a place for you to serve with Jericho Road Ministries!
Trips to Africa
JRM sponsors and other volunteers are encouraged to participate in scheduled trips to Africa. Traveling groups participate in activities such as graduation and baptismal services, leadership development seminars, children’s programs, hut-to-hut evangelism, women’s conferences, and occasionally a safari.
Must haves
A prayerful heart of service is the most important preparation for your trip. In addition, the things you must have are:
Passport
- Make sure your passport is up to date.
- Visas are obtained in Zambia for free and often are not needed.
Vaccines and Medications
- Vaccines should be up to date. Required are:
- Polio
- Measles
- Chickenpox
- DTP
- Influenza
- MMR
- Also recommended are:
- Hepatitis A & B
- Typhoid
- Cholera
- Rabies
- Tetanus
- Malaria medication: Doxycycline is recommended because it’s inexpensive and easy to get—check with your doctor.
- Zambia currently does not require COVID-19 vaccinations or tests.
What to pack
- Limit luggage to one checked bag (50 lbs. or less) and one carry-on. Check your airline for exact size and weight restrictions.
- Avoid overpacking—some locations can wash clothes for a small fee; ask before you travel.
Clothing
Pack lightweight, loose-fitting clothing suitable for warm weather. Be mindful of Zambia’s conservative dress code, especially for women.
- Conservative, modest, comfortable clothing
- Skirts below the knees for women
- No shorts while ministering (modest shorts are fine for sightseeing)
- Lightweight jacket or hoodie for air travel
- Comfortable, sturdy shoes
Other Essentials
- Bible
- Personal toiletries
- Ear plugs (for sleeping)
- Dramamine (for motion sickness)
- Necessary prescription medications
- Sanitation wipes and hand sanitizer
- Toilet tissue (carry partial rolls in your backpack)
- Face tissue
- Chapstick and sunscreen
- Insect repellant (spray or pump; “Off! Backwoods” with 100% DEET is effective)
- Flashlight
- Sunglasses and a sun hat
- Snacks for air travel (purchase at the airport)
- Water bottle
- Washcloths
Other Information
Internet access is limited, but usually available at lodging locations.
For international communication, WhatsApp (a free app) works best. If you prefer, contact your mobile provider to set up an international plan before departure.
Visa and MasterCard are accepted for most souvenir and food purchases at airports and in city centers, and transactions are automatically converted to U.S. dollars.
